GENUINE WORSHIP

JEREMIAH  6:16-30

FAKE IT TO MAKE IT

When we live by that statement, then what we are saying is that we will fake the motions and look like the real thing till we achieve our goal. This mantra happens a lot when we worship in that we do the forms of worship that look like the real thing until we can get to a place of genuine worship but that usually doesn’t happen.

Why?

You can’t fake worship to produce true worship. Worship is not simply outward actions but a reflection of what is going inside our hearts so therefore true worship begins with your heart, the inner space of your thoughts, desires, and emotions that will translate later into physical actions.

We can fool the people around us but God who looks at the heart knows the real thing from the old and as the Israelites had false forms of worship, we too must be careful because we can so easily go through worship without actually worshipping.

  1. GENUINE WORSHIP IS TO GOD, FOR GOD, WITH FULL COMMITMENT

    1. “Thus says the LORD: ‘Stand by the roads, and look, and ask for the ancient paths, where the good way is; and walk in it, and find rest for your souls.’”

      1. What God is asking His people to do is to come back to the old covenant that He has established with them long ago, the old ways that helped them know God and to ultimately come back to knowing who He was as a righteous God. The people have corrupted their ways and offered worship to Him that does not matter. Fake worship is ineffective because it is a ritual without relationship. True worship is about building an ever growing bond with the LORD in the midst of praise and commitment to know His ways.

    2. So why was their worship so useless and fake?

  2. QUALITY OF WORSHIP IS MEASURED BY THE POSTURE OF THE HEART

    1. “But they said, ‘We will not walk in it.’ I set watchmen over you, saying, ‘Pay attention to the sound of the trumpet!” But they said, ‘We will not pay attention.’ Therefore hear, O nations, and know, O congregation, what will happen to them. Hear, O earth; behold, I am bringing disaster upon this people, the fruit of their devices, because they have not paid attention to my words; and as for my law, they have rejected it.”

      1. The posture of their heart was a stubborn refusal to listen to the words of God and even the warnings of God that claimed that their actions were only drawing closer their judgement! They did not enthrone God as Lord and therefore they did not listen. They kept on offering their ritual sacrifices but sacrifice without obedience is useless fake worship.

  3. USELESS WORSHIP PREVENTS GOD’S WORK IN OUR LIVES

    1. “The bellows blow fiercely; the lead is consumed by the fire; in vain the refining goes on, for the wicked are not removed. Rejected silver they are called, for the LORD has rejected them.”

      1. God wants to refine them and bring them to a place of being genuine people of God. God is refining or transforming us but how powerful or potent that is in our lives will be dependent upon our participation. Worship is powerful and worship transforms us to be more like Him in every moment of it but again it will require our hearts to be fully committed.

This reminds me of what Jesus said in Matthew five where he tells people to lay down your sacrifice at the altar if you have any bitterness or hatred to another because to offer that sacrifice while holding onto that sin will produce a ritual and not genuine worship. This is one way where we can check our hearts and ask ourselves what we need to take care of in our hearts before offering our praises because a heart that consistently holds onto curses, bitterness, hatred, lust, or whatever condition of sin will only hinder worship.

Today let the Holy Spirit check you, expose you, and restore you in His loving refiner’s fire!
