The second law of thermodynamics states that the universe left on it’s own moves from a place of order to disorder and that it requires work to keep it in order. We face this everyday as it takes energy to maintain your body the way it is so that it can function well daily. Another prime example is our rooms. Did you realize that no matter how many times you clean your room, that you have to clean it again? That if you don’t maintain the order in your room that somehow over time it finds itself in a mess and do you ever wonder how your mother instinctively comes in when your room is a mess to only accuse you of never cleaning your room?

These are examples of the the law of entropy and that it requires work to either keep our rooms clean or our bodies in standard working condition. When it comes to spirituality, the concept is the same in that when we are not on top of our walks with God, we will find ourselves slowly drifting from Him and into chaos. That is why in Joshua chapter one, that God tells Joshua and the people of God to meditate on His words day and night because of the fact that failure to do so will only lead a person to drift away!

In today’s passage we see visions of flying scrolls, women in baskets, and people with wings to all say that God is doing a cleansing work in His house. Before the promises that God provided in the first four chapters can take in effect, God is saying that He has to clean out the sin and chaos that have been allowed to grow among His people. God’s discipline is hard to experience at times but the purpose of the cleansing is for the possibility of the promise and His presence to endure in us, within us, and around us.

As it is hump day, take some time to do a midweek check up on your soul! Has the law of entropy taken effect to cause you to be in disarray, disconnected, and distant from God? If so, let us turn to God in prayer and His word to collect us, connect us, and keep us close to Him!

  • The Word of God checks us

    • 2 And he said to me, “What do you see?” I answered, “I see a flying scroll. Its length is twenty cubits, and its width ten cubits.”[a] 3 Then he said to me, “This is the curse that goes out over the face of the whole land. For everyone who steals shall be cleaned out according to what is on one side, and everyone who swears falsely[b] shall be cleaned out according to what is on the other side.

      • The scroll here represents the word of God and it’s ability to expose us of things that we keep in our lives that are not of God. God is gracious and therefore as He is gracious He is quick to forgive but never quick to hide the reality of the situation! He exposes to correct and heal us from the things that only harm us in the end. Stay in His word daily! Read it and apply it to your life daily and don’t just put a shallow application to your readings but really check your hearts and be real with yourself! Are you obeying what the word actually says? This maybe hard but anything worth doing will at times get hard and thus put in the work to connect to His word! If you don’t know how to read the word, seek help from pastors, mentors, or even older brothers and sisters in Christ. Don’t make excuses for lack of knowledge but go seek to fill the gaps!

  • Evil can be hidden from plain sight

    • 6 And I said, “What is it?” He said, “This is the basket[c] that is going out.” And he said, “This is their iniquity[d] in all the land.”7 And behold, the leaden cover was lifted, and there was a woman sitting in the basket! 8 And he said, “This is Wickedness.” And he thrust her back into the basket, and thrust down the leaden weight on its opening.

      • Until the lid was taken off, you didn’t know that there was a woman inside of it. She represented wickedness and what evil’s primary way of operating in this world is through secrecy and it’s ability to hide in plain sight. Now we see a lot of brokenness in the world and see evil in plain sight but there is so much sin that is also hidden from our eyes. Yes there is underground evil organizations or illegal activity that the normal law abiding citizen does not see but what about the morally law abiding citizen that justifies the “small” sins in their lives? The reality is that our standard is not set by the government but our standard is God and as it says in Romans we all fail hard at measuring up. BUT the Good News (GOSPEL) is that Jesus Christ fulfilled the standard for us so that we can be in a relationship with God whereas our sin before separated us from God. A person who has truly believed in this is truly on the path to seeking to be like Jesus. This is a process and there will be ups and downs but we must in the end keep facing the same direction of looking towards God. Are we today making excuses for things that we know God is totally against? If so, take it out in repentance and you will realize the power of His forgiveness.
