THERE IS NONE LIKE YOU

DEUTERONOMY 4:32-43

There is an old worship song titled, There is None Like You, and the theme of the song is what you think it is from the title. In today’s passage, God highlights the truth that there is nothing like Him in the universe and that anything else in creation that tries to take the place of God is only a cheap imitation.

NOTES ON THE TEXT

33 Did any people ever hear the voice of a god speaking out of the midst of the fire, as you have heard, and still live?

The Israelites heard the voice of God speaking out of the fire yet they still lived. Let’s pause for a moment and think about what the meaning of that statement. When Moses wanted to see the glory of God before he went any further on the journey of serving Him, God told Moses that he could only see the back of His glory for to truly see Him face to face will only get him killed due to the fact that God is that glorious. For God to be this personally close to the people but still live is purely by grace. God is reminding the Isrealites that pagan idols made of stone and wood do not speak to them but that the God they cannot been seen still interacts with them.

We get awestruck by celebrities who are flawed people just like us and we get stopped in our tracks like deer caught in the headlights when we see outrageously beautiful landscapes in nature. Yet we must realize that as much as we get caught in the glory of a giant great white shark jumping fifty feet in the air in the middle of the ocean, that God is the one who created all these things and is far greater in glory and beauty! The Israelites were privileged with more than a pillar of fire that guided them during the desert, they were in the very presence of the God of the universe and that is something that not everyone gets the privilege of experiencing.

34 Or has any god ever attempted to go and take a nation for himself from the midst of another nation, by trials, by signs, by wonders, and by war, by a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, and by great deeds of terror, all of which the Lord your God did for you in Egypt before your eyes?

A lot of the man made religions is about man seeking God or a higher level of existence but in Christianity, God seeks man out! God is the one that first pursue us and that is by His choosing. Remember, God doesn’t need you but  wants you. It is nothing in of ourselves that makes God want us but that simply He created us to be with Him so that we can experience His love and awesomeness. It says in 1 John 4:19, that we are only able to love like God because God loved us first and therefore we are seeing a God that takes initiative in showing grace, love, mercy, compassion, and intention of being intimate with those He created. Some believe in gods that are so far away that they do not interact with humans but the God of the Bible, the one true God is saying that I am very much invested in the lives of my people and I will not abandon them in times of trouble. Even if we have nothing to offer, He gives and we only respond to that love in worship.

37 And because he loved your fathers and chose their offspring after them[a] and brought you out of Egypt with his own presence, by his great power, 38 driving out before you nations greater and mightier than you, to bring you in, to give you their land for an inheritance, as it is this day, 39 know therefore today, and lay it to your heart, that the Lord is God in heaven above and on the earth beneath; there is no other. 40 Therefore you shall keep his statutes and his commandments, which I command you today, that it may go well with you and with your children after you, and that you may prolong your days in the land that the Lord your God is giving you for all time.”

The deliverance and inheritance of the blessing that the Israelites received is because of God’s generosity. When God delivered them out of Egypt, that was a miracle in of itself! Can you imagine hundreds of thousands of people just straight up leaving a country at once because they’re God delivered them from oppression? When we experience the blessings of God and He moves in our lives, we are to respond by acknowledging that it is because of God and praise Him in the process. From these experiences the people were to lay it in their hearts this truth, meaning that this truth was to be very much part of them as the blood in their veins

“The Lord is God in heaven above and on the earth beneath; there is no other.”

Life will try and make idols that mimic or try and replace God but we can search for all eternity and come to the realization that there is nothing even close to God in His awesomeness and goodness. God wanted that truth to be in their hearts and ours as well because if we don’t the temptation to sin will be strong.

CONCLUSION

  • We must remind ourselves that as great as creation and created people can be, the creator outshines in glory.

  • God doesn’t need you but He wants you. We only can love because He first loved us.

  • This truth must be a core part of who we are: The Lord is God over all and that there is none like Him.
