16 “You know how we lived in the land of Egypt, and how we came through the midst of the nations through which you passed. 17 And you have seen their detestable things, their idols of wood and stone, of silver and gold, which were among them.
To be a citizen of a nation means that you are part of the club. As a citizen, you are declaring that you going “FB official” with a particular nation and that this particular nation is your home. That whatever nation that you are affiliated with, that you root for them whether in global sporting events like the world cup or that you are proud to embody the ideals and thoughts of that nation.
YOLO is one of those fads that came and went. The term “YOLO” stood for “you only live once,” and therefore when someone was deciding on whether to make a mature or reckless decision, they would just say “YOLO” and choose the riskier, probably more fun, but potentially devastating choice. WHY? Because you only live once and therefore might as well right?
How you use these concepts actually determines the quality of your Christian walk and if anything it will reveal how you are walking with the LORD right now! As the Israelites were passing through the other nations, they were to see how they were living and not copy them but to live differently as they were heading towards their destination of inhabiting the promise land and becoming the established community of God. Just like how the Israelites were passing through, did you know that you and I are also only passing through in this world? We forget that as Christians that this life now is not the only life we will live but that there is life after death but yet we live as if this was it! Your best life is not now! If anything your best life is only yet to come as a follower of Christ because the journey of heading towards heaven is on train ride of gradual improvement.
No this is not the only life you live but is the life you have to set yourself up for the life to come for what you truly say who God is to you in this life will determine how the next one will go. So therefore, we must look at ourselves in the way we spend our time, energy, resources, ambitions, and whatever we find ourselves doing and ask if we are preparing for heaven by living in the presence of God now or only forfeiting all of that for temporary pleasures? We are not citizens of this world but citizens of heaven when we are in Christ so therefore let us look at our lives today and see whether we are living a lifestyle that knows that this life is not all there is and that we are on a journey of going to the “Promised Land.”
